Artist Opening Reception for Shannon Godby

Art is a part of who I am. Painting has always been my first passion followed closely by photography. For over twenty years, I have been creating works of art in both mediums, and I strive to become a better artist with each new painting and each new photograph. Over the last few years I have begun to infuse parts of each medium to create abstract paintings based on images found in nature. I never try to recreate exactly what I see, but to express the feelings I get from a scene. My goal is to portray the atmospheric qualities of a scene without giving away every detail.

When I show a piece I want the viewer to connect with the painting by adding their own feelings to it as well. I want it to remind them of something familiar. This makes it more of a personal experience for them. When I look at my work I want to be reminded of what originally inspired me about it. Whether it was late day sun creating long shadows over a field or simply the way a group of elements work together, if I look at the painting and get that same feeling, I have accomplished my goal.

Artist Opening Reception for Laura Jacob

Laura received a Bachelor of Fine Art Degree in Oil Painting from Bowling Green State University in 1997.  While there she developed a passion for creating art by hand and this passion has stayed with her over the years.  Shortly after college Laura moved to Atlanta, Georgia and spent several years working as an art consultant for various galleries.

She returned to making art after taking a workshop six years ago in Columbus.  Laura starting experimenting with her designs and fell in love with the look and textures of mixed media, specifically beeswax collage art.  She began teaching herself the art of Encaustic Painting and hasn't looked back since.

Painting with melted beeswax gives her the ability to combine paper products, paint, ink, beads, threads, pressed flowers and many other objects that she holds dear.  You will often see incised lines filled with oil paint and shimmering powders laid upon layers and layers of wax.  She enjoys the versatility and unexpected surprises she discovers with the art of encaustic painting.  It allows her the freedom to create distinctive, ethereal pieces.

Artist Opening Reception for Suzanne Robinson

"I draw most of my inspiration from what I observe in and around my home which is nestled in the woods of Pataskala, Ohio. It's a privilege to be able to express on canvas the peace and harmony conveyed in nature’s beautiful backdrop. My landscapes offer the onlooker an appreciation of the majesty of vistas that change from one season to the next. Crystal blue seascapes harken me back to wonderful beach vacations shared with my family".

One doesn’t have to go to the country or seaside to appreciate nature’s calming beauty since Robinson’s work aptly expresses the peace and harmony that can only be conveyed in nature’s back drop.

Artist Opening Reception for Carolyn Heffelfinger

"My paintings are an expression of my love of nature. As a child  my desire to draw began at an early age and I would put to use any paper surface my mother could provide for me. I hope to convey to the viewer the passion, beauty, and reverence i feel when exploring our magical natural world."

Majoring in fine art at Kent State University, Carolyn focused on painting the figure. Her study of the human form proved later helpful in her anatomical renderings of the wildlife in her paintings.  She worked as a graphic artist immediately after college and later for seven years as an illustrator's assistant.

Close observation, photography and her almost daily treks into the woods, fields and along the Big Walnut Creek, over which her studio sits, have been the inspirational reference for her richly colored, realistic oil paintings.

Carolyn has been included in local and national juried competitions in which she has been recognized and awarded for her paintings.

Artist Opening Reception for Robin Roberts

To me, painting is relaxing and my way of getting time with God and His creation. I want to soak it in, to understand it as well as I can, and then capture the special beauty in life as light and shadow splashes across the scene. I enjoy painting so many different subjects- everything from architecture to wildlife to cityscapes to rural scenes. I have always loved being outside so I really enjoy plein air painting. Nature never fails to reward and challenge me as an artist with its constantly changing colors, light, and atmosphere. When painting, I depend on my design skills as a graphic designer, spirited brushstrokes and tonal unity. I also enjoy working in my studio in Ashland, Ohio when I can not get outside.

Robin graduated from Ashland (College) University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Visual Communication after spending one year of intensive study at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. After years of work at agencies and as the head of graphics at Rubbermaid in Wooster, Ohio, Robin opened Red Red Design, a graphic design studio in Ashland, Ohio in 2001.

Artist Opening Reception for Jurate Phillips

Jurate Phillips (pronounced: You-ra-te) grew up in Soviet occupied Lithuania. From her earliest memories she has studied art and developed her talents in that field. She graduated from Siauliu Universitetas, in Lithuania (1996), where she was classically trained in painting and design. She came to the United States in 1997 where she has since graduated from Columbus College of Art and Design (2002). She now resides in Columbus, Ohio with her husband and daughter.  Since her earliest days her passion has been for art in all forms. Jurate has partaken in the creation of many pieces from photography, to painting and sculpture. Her work can be found all over the world in both residential and commercial settings.

After working as an interior designer, freelance artist and teaching art she has returned to her first love, which is painting. She now focuses on painting regularly and exhibiting her work. She credits most of her aesthetics to her maternal Grandmother, with whom she spent most of her summers. The natural beauty that surrounded her on her grandmothers farm has influenced the size, scope and subject matter ever since. Her emotions dictate to her what she will paint. One day she will do a landscape, another an abstract, or she might be inspired by a simple flower bloom.

Artist Opening Reception for Jane Dippold "Painting with Paper"

I have been an artist and children's illustrator for almost 30 years. After graduating from Miami University with a Bachelor of Fine Art, I started my career working as an artist for Gibson Greeting Cards in Cincinnati, Ohio. Since 1994, I have worked as a freelance artist creating artwork for over 30 children's books, and countless designs for giftware, giftwrap and greeting cards. Since 2010 I have been creating fine art painted paper collages of the Ohio landscape.
In my collage work, I paint acrylic paint on tissue paper, newsprint, recycled brown bags, book and poetry pages. I collect these painted colors into a palette to use at the start of a painting. I then tear, and sometimes precisely cut the paper, and adhere it to canvas in layers. This technique creates a painting that at first may appear as an oil painting, but on closer inspection, small pieces of paper, written words, newsprint, drawing and poetry become visible and provide additional meaning.
The ways in which nature and the viewer can abstract the open landscape with color blocks, shapes and texture lends itself to the torn and cut pieces of collage. The randomness of the brushstrokes on the paper provides vibrancy and natural motion within the artwork.
I work from photographs that I take myself, driving the backroads of western Ohio. I am inspired by the ever changing landscape and weather in Ohio as well as the flat open countryside, bright sunrises and expansive sunsets punctuated by barns, and silos. I want those who view my work to see and appreciate the beauty around us every day of the year in Ohio.

Jewelry Trunk Show Sue Corbin

At the age of 53, Sue Corbin left her life as a successful business executive and leader in two industries to raise a newborn granddaughter.  The transition from non-stop meetings and travel to a sedentary life was a bit challenging so Sue decided to take jewelry making classes.  By the second class, she felt that she knew more than her teacher and walked away to develop her own style.

Sue always loved and purchased one-of-a-kind artwork throughout her life, so she had an affinity for the unique.  Unbeknownst to her, the talent she observed and acquired from her gifted, prodigy mother came to the surface as she created jewelry for herself.  When strangers approached her and complimented her jewelry, she realized she had a gift.

Although Sue is eclectic in many ways in her designs she favors symmetry.  She creates simple designs as well as unique pieces using natural gemstones that inspire her. She only designs jewelry that she loves and fortunately for her, many others love her designs.

Her background in sales and marketing led her to walk into a gallery in 2007 to see if her creations had merit and her career as a professional jewelry designer began.  She was the permanent artist in several galleries in Ohio for the past 9 years and interestingly enough, she is back in the gallery that first accepted her jewelry in 2009, Hayley Gallery.

Long before creating commercially successful art, Lora brought artistry to everything she did. During the years she brought up her family, she worked as a face-painter at art fairs, turned her homes and gardens into showcases of unique color and ideas, she made bird houses and furniture from natural materials, she studied and perfected skills in wood-working, upholstery, painting, pottery and tile and experimented with the use of multiple mediums and styles. She became an expert in tools and materials. Her most impressive skill though is turning old timepieces into beautiful jewelry.

When I work with metals, I am reminded that art is a journey and the
destination is the person wearing and enjoying my jewelry. My process begins by hand drawing intricate designs on a small piece of flattened metal. The metal is then carefully acid etched to reveal a tactile, graphic pattern. My hope is that the person wearing my jewelry will feel as unique and beautiful as the design that is individually etched on each piece.

JEWELRY TRUNK SHOW CATHERINA BISHOPP

Jewelry, as an art form, has the power to create moods, provoke opinions and produce reactions. At her studio. this is the design philosophy that New York based jewelry designer Catherina Bishopp follows in creating and developing her own unique collection of jewelry. Although she uses precious stones and metals in her work, the design is of much greater importance to Catherina than the intrinsic value of the materials she works with. Her ultimate goal is evoking humor, whimsy and rare imagination through the use of striking color and inventive design in each of her pieces, which is what gives Catherina her signature look.

Catherina has lived and worked in New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, The Netherlands, France, UK, Trinidad and Tobago, and now in Columbus, Ohio. This close view of other cultures and people gives Catherina a diverse perspective on her own designs and a greater appreciation of other artists' abilities. Today, Catherina continues to be inspired by this experience as she brings her special touch to the creation of memorable jewelry which compliments a woman's beauty.
